To commemorate the World Soil Day, a one day Workshop was organized by the Department of Environmental Science, Amar Singh College, Srinagar on December 09, 2021 entitled “Boost Soil Productivity and Enhance Soil Conservation”.
The workshop consisted of three sessions- theme based online inter-college Photo Contest, Guest Lecture and Hand-on-Gardening training. The resource person for the workshop was Imtiyaz Ahmad Lone, Joint Director, Department of Soil and Water Conservation (Kashmir Division). Introduction to the programme was presented by Prof. Shazia Habib (Head Environmental Science). Keynote address was delivered by Prof. Bashir Ahmad Rather, wherein he enlightened the participants about the history and significance of World Soil Day.
The resource person delivered an extensive lecture on the said theme and highlighted the mandate of his department in soil management of Valley. This was followed by an interactive session and shared some interesting success stories about the soil restoration achieved by his department.
This was followed by a hand-on-gardening training for the student participants. The training included the preparation of soil beds, plantation of perennial seedlings, identification of weeds, dealing with pests, learning deweeding techniques etc.
The training was facilitated by Ghulam Mohammad (Gardener, Amar Singh College). Prof. Asma Hussan (Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science) presented vote of thanks.
Afreen Beigh of (B.Sc. 5th semester) Amar Singh College and Rigzen Wangtak of GDC Nubra were declared winners under Soil Class category of Photo contest. Under Soil Management category, Janib Ahmad Tantray of (3rd sem.) GDC Kokernag and Suhail Ahmad Baba (B.Sc. 5th semester), Amar Singh College emerged out as winners.
