Solhia Yousuf hails from Illahi Bagh area in Srinagar district is the first female rugby coach in Jammu and Kashmir. She done his schooling from Green valley educational institute Srinagar till higher secondary level then moved to Islamic university of science and Technology Awantipora for B.Tech. She also moved Jamia Hamdah university new Delhi for M.Tech. During schooling days, Solhia saw a sports teacher gives training of rugby game to others students then she motives and starts her carrier in rugby game.
In 2008, Solhia participated number of rugby events during schooling days in same year, she played national for first time. In 2008, Her team also won shield winners of All India women’s rugby 7’s championship held in Pune. In 2009, She selected for world rugby level 1 referring and coaching course in Pune. In 2010, She selected for Asian women’s championship for India camp held at Pune. In 2011, she again selected for Asian Women’s championship for India in Pune. In 2015, she moved for mini Olympics in Kerala. In 2017, She participated 3rd national snow rugby 7’s championship held at Gulmarg.
Solhia is coach and captain of Jammu and Kashmir women’s rugby team. Under her captaincy, Jammu and Kashmir rugby team won Bronze medal at Khelo India Winter Games held at Gulmarg in 2020, Shield winners of all Indian women’s rugby 7’s championship in Pune in 2008 and 2009.She has headed the U18 team at Chennai nationals, U14 team at Hyderabad.
Solhia Yousuf while exclusively talking with Kashmir Glacier said that, “Since childhood I have Interested in sports but accidentally I have chosen rugby as my carrier. When I started rugby that time in Jammu and have not Interested in this game as everyone’s prefer cricket or other games. Initially I got serious injuries many times but I cannot quite as my family member feel risk of getting injuries in this game. But all seeing my passion and zeal for rugby they gave in and supported me. Now they feeling proud of me.”
“My family member especially my mother support me every time in bad as well good conditions. Wherever i stand right now it’s all because of my family. My mother take care of my diet and fitness schedule. Rugby requires strength, stamina and mental shape and my mom makes sure I have it all, “he added.
She further said that “We didn’t get much attention although we used to give a lot of efforts. But we have come a long way since those days. Things are better now, however, the struggle is still on, as we belong to a relatively conservative society.”
“I wants to make herself professional and train girls of Jammu and Kashmir professionally so that they can play for the national team as well International tomorrow. They will also feel proud from playing in national side, “She told Kashmir Glacier.
When asked about talent of youths in Jammu and Kashmir said there is lot of talent in every field but there is lack of platforms for youths. Government should come forward and take intuitive for uprising of talented youths. If they cannot come forward youth has taken another way as which is nowadays common i.e., Drugs and other activates.
Solhia while talking with Kashmir Glacier said that, “In our valley drug has raised as youths take every drug which is cause of concern. Youth’s should come in sports fields and take advantage of games”.
