Mahfooz Illahi Hajam hails from Kujur village in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district who conquer the world’s highest peak Mount Everest (29,035ft) on 1st June. Mahfooz done his schooling from Central High School Ashajipora Anantnag then moved Govt. boy’s degree Collage Anantnag for graduation. He also done M.Ed and Masters in economics. During school days he wants to go in adventurer field.
In 2004, he done basic course of adventurer in Atul Bihari Vajpayee Mountaineering Institute Manali. In 2006, He also done advanced course in Nehru institute of Mountaineering Uttarkashi in Uttrakhand. In 2010, he has also done method of instructor at Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering Pahalgam J&K. He also done different courses includes Paragliding, skiing and rafting at Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and winter Sports (JIW&WS) Pahalgam.
0n 24 March, Mahfooz Illahi with his 6 associates leave from Pahalgam then reached to Kathmandu on 1 April and starts his journey towards mount Everest. On 1st June he Climbed and become first civilian from Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory to scale the mount Everest.
Before scaling Mount Everest, Mahfooz had climbed Kolahoi peak which is in Pahalgam in Anantnag district. Kolahoi Peak which is highest mountain with a peak elevation of 17,799 ft in Jammu and Kashmir is part of the Himalaya Range, and is located between 15 km south of Sonamarg and 21 km north from Aru, Pahalgam.
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world above sea level located at Mahalangur Himal Sub range of Himalayas. The China-Nepal border run across its summit point.
Mahfooz Illahi while exclusively talking with Kashmir Glacier said that,” Rights from my childhood I wants to go in adventure field and in schooling days I have professionally come in this field. Presently i have working as instructor in Jawahar institute of Mountaineering and winter Sports (JIM&WS) Pahalgam.”
“In 2019, we have made all planned to scale mount Everest with the help principal Jawahar institute of Mountaineering and winter Sports (JIM&WS) Pahalgam but due to Covid-19 pandemic which was postponed. Then in 2021, it was first Joint International expedition by Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and winter Sports and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering which was led by colonel I S Thapa.”
Mahfooz while talking with Kashmir Glacier said, “The journey was full of difficulties because all times back to back cyclones hits. Avalanches, Stormy winds and bad weather suffer hindrances. We have seen many corpus during journey but we was full of sprit and in the blessings of family and other dear ones we are climbs Everest without any causality or other injuries. I am very happy in this mile stone as we feel Proud now. “adding,” It was a tough adventure for us as we are stuck for 10 days with a team at camp 2 due to heavy winds on Mount Everest.”
“It was my dream to climb mount Everest which has been come true with the help of my mentor and principal Jawahar institute of Mountaineering who sponsored me and all credit goes to him. I am belongs from middle class family as i cannot effort huge amount. I was shocked when I saw my name in the team list of who can go for mount Everest summit”, Mahfooz while talking with Kashmir Glacier.
He further said that it is an first time two institutes Jawahar institute of Mountaineering and winter Sports (JIM&WS) Pahalgam and Nehru institute of Mountaineering Uttarkashi can go jointly for summit.
“My parents support me every time as they never barred me to somewhere in this adventure field. They every time told me you have to do what you want. Now today with the blessings of my parents I feel Proud of myself now”, When asked about parental support in this field said.
“There is a lot of talented youths in across Union Territory but needs proper guidance. The youths of Jammu Kashmir who are going towards drugs to please join adventure sports as in Jammu Kashmir we have vast fields of adventure and scope. Make it your hobby, livelihood, profession. If you can’t climb the mountain you can’t see the view, “he further said
People from all walks includes Lieutenant governor Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, Former Chief minister Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Mohd Yousuf Targami Congratulate Mahfooz Illahi for his success and termed as the real identity of Kashmir.

Pertinently before Mahfooz Illahi, Nahida Manzoor had the honour of being the first woman in Kashmir to climb Mount Everest. While as Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry soldier Manzoor Ahmed of Kuchpora Anantnag has also scaled the world’s highest peak. (Kashmir Glacier)
