Sajad Ahmad Shah while interacting with Raouf Dar, correspondent Kashmir Glacier said:
Q. How this idea came into your mind for helping others who are in a desperate situation?
A. Once I saw a pregnant lady asking for help by stopping vehicles but nobody stepped provide her help and after watching her pleading, I couldn’t stop myself for helping her. I drove her to the hospital and that moment I felt something beyond my imagination. Later on I told my family about the incident and they appreciated me for taking the lead in this. I still remember their words, “You did a great job. Always help needy people without thinking about money.”
Q. What challenges are being faced by you in helping women folks who are in distress?
A. I faced lot of challenges in beginning while ferrying patient’s especially pregnant ladies to Hospital because of having lack of knowledge and expertise on commuting them to the hospitals but with the passage of time I gained experience which is still helping me out.
Q. What are the normal number of call’s you respond with your timely help on daily basis?
A. Well I haven’t put any limit as I try to be available for many as I could but for records I usually address 10-15 desperate calls on daily basis nowadays mostly from Corona virus positive patients.
Q. How do you bear Ambulance transfer expenses while stay off from work?
A. Actually sometimes my parents help me and most of the times I use my personal saving into this cause. I firmly believe in Almighty Allah for lending me means out of unexpected ways.
Q. Did anyone from Jammu Kashmir UT administration extended any kind of support to you in terms of finance or something?
A. No nothing at all, I don’t think that they might be knowing that there is someone ferrying patients to nearby hospitals without charging single penny from them. But honestly speaking I don’t care because I am doing all this for my people, for my solace of heart and soul.
Q. Did you want any support from JK UT administration?
A. The only thing that I want from our Administration is that they can come up with some sort of help in installing Oxygen system on my vehicle so that I can use it as a full-fledged Ambulance for Covid-19 patients as its very hard to see them gasping for Oxygen while transferring them to hospitals. That’s all I need nothing else.
Q. What motivated you to pursue such initiative in which you put not only your life at risk but your family could suffer too in this pandemic?
A. I don’t feel any threat because I strictly adhere to the Covid prevention guidelines and SOP’s like using PPE kits, Sanitization, etc. I remember that last time I transferred a corpse of a Covid-19 positive to about 30 kms in Anantnag and nothing stopped me from doing that just because I knew that I have followed all the necessary precautions.
