Rabi Ul Awal is the third month of Islamic calendar. The name RabiUlAwal is actually the combination of two Arabic words, “Rabi” and “awal”. Rabi in Arabic means ” the month of spring” and Awal means ” first”, so literally it will be translated as ” first spring”, but if we look deeply in this matter we find that the month of spring has two parts, first is that part in which flowers grow and second one is when fruits ripe. The first one in Arabic is called “Rabi Ul Awal” and second one is called as “Rabi ul Aakhir” (which literally means “second spring” as “aakhir” in Arabic means “second”). This “first spring” and “second spring” is somehow confusing for some people, so according to me, the perfect translation of Rabi Ul Awal will be “entry of spring” and the perfect translation of ” RabiUlAakhir” will be ” ending of spring”.
Some researchers say that when Rabi Ul Awal was named it was “entry of spring” that time but now wether it comes in spring or not it will be called as “Rabi Ul Awal “. There isn’t any special rule or order about RabiUlAwal in Islam but at the same time there are some events that happened in this month by which it gains speciality. Among them the greatest and most important thing is that this month has a relation with our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH. The birth and the death of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)
In the month of RabiUlAwal our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him was born) and in the same month Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) left this world. Imam Nawawi(may Allah be pleased with him) writes that:
“ Scholars agree in this matter that Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him was born in rabiulawal on Monday and the death of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him also happened in rabiulawal on Monday ” [Sharahmuslim]
Everything that has even a minor connection with our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) becomes special and indeed RabiUlAwal is having a strong connection with our beloved Prophet because it is the month in which our beloved Prophet was born and it is the same month in which our Prophet left this world as mentioned earlier. Now when it is known that this month is special, a question arises that what to do in this month? The answer is that we should adore this month by the obedience of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The obedience should be in our belief, in worshiping Allah, in ethics, in social life, in private life and in every aspect of our life.
The life of companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the best model for all of us to know how to love and obey beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). There are great lessons in the life of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), so at least in this month we should read any biography book of our Prophet (PBUH). RabiUlAwal reminds us about our Prophet. It reminds us that there was someone who sacrificed a lot for us, who always cared about us and who will save us in Aakhirah by his Shafa’ah. Muslims should enquire themselves in this month that how much they act upon the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) __! We should also ask ourselves that how much we fulfil the rights of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that are necessary upon us__!
Talking about the rights of Prophet Muhammad PBUHMaulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RH) writes:
“The greatest benefaction of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him is upon us. It is because the rights of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him are more on us. Some rights are:
1_Faith on the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
2_Obey Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in every command.
3_Create a place in our heart for the glory and love of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
4_And recite salutation on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)”
[Huqooqul Islam / page 4]
In another book same Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanviwrites:
“There are three rights of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
First right is love, second right is greatness and third right is obedience of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Now what people have done is breakdown of these rights. Some people only took love, they neglected greatness and obedience of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Some took greatness only, they distanced themselves from love and obedience of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Some only contented on obedience, they didn’t tried to acquire love and greatness of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in their hearts. Although it is important to enact every right of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) equally. It is wajib(important) to enact every right of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, love, greatness and obedience also.” [Mawa’ez e Milad un Nabi / page 601]
This obedience, love and respect of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) shouldn’t be only in this month, this month is actually a reminder for us. We should obey, respect, remember and love our beloved Prophet in each and every second of our lives. There are some other special events also that happened in this month, like:
In this month Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) constructed the glorious Masjid – E- Quba. First stone was laid down by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), second by Hazrat Abu Bakar (RA), and third by Hazrat Umar (Ra). It was the time when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) moved from Makkah to Madina [al bidayah wan nihaya]
The marriage of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) daughter Hazrat Umm – e- Kalthum (RA) and Hazrat Usman (RA) also happened in this month on 3rd Hijri. Moreover Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) son Hazratibrahim (RA),HazratMa’az Bin Jabal (RA), and HazratZainabBintiJahash(RA) also died in this month.
