Ahead of Parliament session, Poswal pitches for Paharii, Gojrii, Punjabi as official languages of J&K UT

Jammu: Seeking urgent attention of the BJP led central government and the opposition parties, prominent political activist of Jammu and Kashmir Ishfaq-ur-Rehman Poswal on Monday demanded that necessary amendment be made in the bill and some other languages of the marginalized sections of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir be included in the draft bill before it is brought in the Parliament.
Poswal, who also contested assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir as BJP candidate in 2014, although, praised the central government’s decision of including 5 languages of J&K UT namely Hindi, Dogri, Kashmiri, Urdu and English as official languages, but said that this “doesn’t meet the aspirations of the entire population of Jammu and Kashmir”.
As per a press release issued here today, Poswal has also written a letter to both BJP led union govt as well as the opposition parties including the Congress Party demanding therein that necessary amendment be made in the bill and languages like Paharii, Gojrii, Punjabi etc should also be made as official languages of J&K.
This, he said, “Will meet aspirations of the marginalized sections of the erstwhile State”.
He said, “Languages like Paharii, Gojrii, Punjabi etc are spoken by around 45% population of J&K”.
Hindi, Dogri, Kashmiri, Urdu and English, which have been made as official languages are spoken by around 55% population of J&K UT, he said.
“This is a welcome initiative by the BJP led central govt but what about 45% population,” Poswal said adding that people have been agitating on roads for the last so many days demanding that Paharii, Gojrii, Punjabi etc should also be mad as official languages of J&K UT.
Poswal said that BJP led govt must look into the matter to win hearts and minds of the people, especially from the marginalized sections and make necessary amendment in the bill to make Paharii, Gojrii, Punjabi etc as official languages of the J&K UT.
Poswal also appealed to the opposition parties to force the union govt in the upcoming Parliament session to make necessary amendment for making Paharii, Gojrii, Punjabi etc as official languages of J&K before the bill is brought in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
