Ex-SMC Mayor still enjoys protocols 3 months after his removal

Despite losing no-confidence vote three months ago, Srinagar Municipal Corporation’s former mayor is still having the protocols of mayor even when he is just a corporator after his removal.

Junaid Mattu was elected as SMC Mayor as a candidate of People’s Conference on 6 November 2018 after 40 corporators voted in his favor. And two years after he was removed from the post on 16 June 2020 after losing a no-confidence motion.

As a mayor, he was allotted an official Bunglow in high security zone of Church Lane in Sonwar, Srinagar, in addition to other protocols and a government SUV.

However three months after his removal from the mayoral post, he is still living in the same bunglow and enjoying other protocols when he is just a corporator.

According to news agency KDC many corporators have complained to the government for failing to provide them security and accommodation even as they face security threat.

“How can government favor one corporator and ignore others who deserve accommodation. Many corporators who have security issues have been put up in a single room in MLA hostel. But the former mayor is still living in a posh house in church lane. Why is he administration discriminating within us,” many corporators told news agency KDC.

The Mayor of Srinagar and Jammu civic bodies were having common protocols as other corporators, but after the abrogation of Article 370 in August last year, their status was raised to the equivalent to that of Minister of State (MoS).

The order was issued on 18 August 2019 by the then Additional Secretary Subash Chibber saying the hospitality and protocol department shall make necessary insertion in the J&K State Warrant of Precedence with the approval of the competent authority.

The SMC has been without a mayor from last three months after the Commissioner deferred the polls by three months in June when Junaid Mattu was removed.

The corporation has been mired in controversies since 2018 as tussle for mayoral chair between former mayor Junaid Mattu and former deputy mayor Sheikh Imran had become a daily show.

The SMC has 70 corporators, of which 17 belong to the Congress and four to the BJP. Peoples Conference of Sajad Lone claims 22 members, while NC and PDP, which had boycotted the civic body polls, claim some of the corporators.
In absence of an elected mayor, deputy mayor Parvez Qadri is acting as mayor of the corporation.(KDC)
