To keep eye on students, Govt to install CCTV cameras in campuses

Srinagar: The J&K government is mulling to install CCTV cameras in all government and private Schools across Kashmir to monitor activities of the students.
The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan has directed the Education Department to start installation of the cameras in the schools in every district.
“There is a Supreme Court direction for installation of CCTV cameras in educational institutions. It is on the basis of these directions I have instructed the Director, School Education Kashmir to install the cameras in the government as well as private schools,” Khan said.
Following the directions, the department has asked the Chief Education Officers (CEOs) to submit their requisitions to the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK). There are around 11539 government schools and 2715 private educational institutions in the Valley. All of them will be equipped with the CCTV cameras.
Authorities at Baramulla district have already submitted its projections to the DSEK, on the basis of estimates from the companies dealing with installation of the cameras.
“We have 1345 schools in the district having requirement of four CCTV cameras and one monitor in each school. The average unit cost per school is Rs 25,000,” said an official in the office of CEO, Baramulla.
The CEO Kupwara has also submitted the requisition for around 1,400 schools.
An official said the CCTV cameras will enable the school heads to monitor students’ activities within the premises of the campuses on daily basis. The move will also help the schools authorities to check the students bunking the classes.
The cameras will be first installed in High and Higher Secondary Schools followed by Middle and Primary Schools.
“The CCTV cameras need regular electricity facility which is lacking in most of the schools. The issue is being discussed in the department,” said the official.
