Normalcy acrobatics go on: Mehbooba Mufti slams BJP’s Kashmir outreach amid lockdown

Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir CM Mehbooba Mufti, who has been under detention for over 6 months now, has hit out at Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi over his Kashmir tour says “normalcy acrobatics in full swing”.

Mehbooba Mufti tweeted on Wednesday, “Normalcy acrobatics in full swing. Kashmir continues to reel under a crippling internet shutdown & political leaders remain detained. There is massive surveillance & heavy troop presence yet curated photo ops continue”.

With no Internet in the Kashmir Valley, Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter Iltija has taken over Mehbooba’s Twitter account with due permission.

Naqvi was the first Union minister to visit Kashmir on Tuesday as part of the Centre’s outreach programme.

The purpose of the Centre’s outreach programme in Jammu and Kashmir is to get firsthand account of problems being faced by the people and address them, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

Naqvi, who laid the foundation stone for a development project at Harwan on the outskirts of the city, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen to ensure that the benefits of the positive changes initiated by the Central government should reach the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“The aspirations and expectations of the people were not upheld and the corruption had eaten into Jammu and Kashmir…Some people had benefited themselves but we want prosperity for all,” Naqvi said.

Apart from Mehbooba Mufti, the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the CPI(M) also launched a scathing attack on BJP over its public outreach programme in the Union Territory, saying “the move to parachute 36 ministers is a propaganda in panic mode as the party has failed on every count throughout the country”.

“What is the need for the BJP ministers to visit J&K when the government claims everything is normal? Reality is that they want to sell Kashmir’s ‘normalcy’ and ‘all is well’ story for those in mainland India who are ignorant about Kashmir’s ground realities,” senior CPI(M) leader and former legislator M Y Tarigami said in a statement.

Reacting to the statement of Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in Srinagar that his government’s “outreach programme is aimed at resolving all the issues” confronting people in Jammu and Kashmir, he said the visit is “nothing but a hoax”.

“Did the BJP government assess what has befallen on people of J&K after abrogation of Article 370? How the economy of J&K got shattered due to its misadventure,” Tarigami said, adding that the abrogation of Article 370 was an “assault” on the Constitution of India.

The Centre launched a major week-long public outreach programme on January 18 to aware people about the benefits of the move and to disseminate information about the implementation of its policies and programmes for the overall development of Jammu and Kashmir.  (With PTI inputs)
