Massive clashes erupt in downtown Srinagar

Srinagar: Massive clashes erupted between youth and government forces in downtown Srinagar after the Friday prayers.

Eyewitnesses said that clashes erupted after youth who were in hundreds tried to march towards Khanyar area, “They were stopped by police to which the youth responded with tear gas and pellet firing,” Said Mohammad Sahil.

He said that the youth who were chanting pro-ISIS, pro-Zakir Musa and pro-Jaish slogans threw stones on the government forces who responded with shelling leading to clashes between the two.

Adding that the youth were carrying flags of militant outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad and ISJK.

The youth had started the march from Srinagar’s famous Jamia Masjid and were trying to move towards Khanyar, another eye witness said.

The clashes were going on in Khawaja Bazar area of Srinagar’s downtown that is known for anti-India sentiment.
