Srinagar: Yesterday night, a speeding car hit a married couple on a scooter near Abu Baker Masjid, Chanapora area of Srinagar resulting in the death of the driver, while his wife has been critically injured, police said.

An eyewitness, Nissar Ahmad, told that a speedy car hit the scooter when a police vehicle was trying to catch them. “I was standing outside the Masjid when I saw a speedy car (Hyundai i-10 Grand) coming in my direction. The police vehicle was behind them, probably trying to catch them. When they reach near the masjid, the car hit the scooter, resulting in the killing of a person.”

The driver of the scooter, Lokesh Bikas, a resident of Nepal, who was running a restaurant in the locality, died on the spot while her wife has been shifted to the hospital. “Her condition was also critical,” he said.

The station police officer of Chanapora, Owais Geelani told that they have arrested the driver and two other boys who were in the car.

However, the police have lodged an FIR in the case and denied that they were after the car.
